On to Saturday then! After breakfast we went to the Natural History Museum with the Strains in Jackson. I should not just skip over breakfast... We had some lovely meals with the Strains! In the photo below David are “braai-ing” very good hamburger patties! He also made a great breakfast. They looked after us well!

Our first worship service started at 8:00. Redeemer Presbyterian Church Jackson (http://redeemerjackson.com). A multicultural church in the heart of a very divided area. It was a good experience. Good expository preaching by Rev. Mike Campbell, applied well to the context of the congregation. It was on 1 Corinthians 8, emphasising that the important value of Christian freedom in Christ, comes second to the value of love for our brothers and sisters. This is exactly what Christ did for us. He sacrificed his freedom and became a Man, crucified in our place. Love for his Father, and love for us, motivated Him. How can we not follow in His footsteps, tapping into the power of His sacrifice for us?

Then it was off to First Presbyterian Church Jackson, for Sunday School and then the communion service. Sunday school is not what we think about when hearing the term. This Church has about 30 adult Sunday school classes which are packed. They also have about 15 classes for children and one for people who want to be confirmed. What an experience to see so many people eager to learn more. In their tradition, Sunday school is something you do for life. After 45 minutes of working through the Prayers of Paul under David’s lead, we had a chance to grab a quick coffee, before the service, which is a big occasion. The ministers are robed, there is a full choir and real good music. It’s a bit too formal for me, but it was very uplifting and encouraging to have fellowship with fellow believers and to see a church that is over 175 years old, still worshiping God with zeal was a great experience.

The afternoon David and Sheena invited some congregants over for lunch and we had some more good fellowship. (The Americans make a big deal of Fall - or Autumn as we call it - and so the table was decorated accordingly.) After cleaning up it was back to church for the evening worship which was a lot more informal. The focus was, as in the morning, on finishing the race of life well from 2 Timothy’s last chapter. We need to know that life is going to be tough! We need to keep our mind filled with God’s truth from his Word, as Paul did till the end. We need to keep our eyes on Jesus. We need to run the race with fellow believers and finally we need to be totally dependent on God’s grace, and not our own strength!

One of our highlights of our time in Jackson, came Monday morning. We had to get up early to meet with Rev. Mike Campbell. We had breakfast together and listened to him sharing his communities’ challenges and progresses in being a multi-ethnic community. He stressed the importance of a diverse leadership, of real relationships, of being patient with people and yet confronting and addressing wrong believes! The most important thing according to him though, is having leadership from different backgrounds and ethnicity, that are so sure of themselves in Christ that they are not afraid of owning up to their brokenness and the brokenness of their history because Jesus has forgiven them! On the other hand they are also so sure that their righteousness is only to be found in Christ that they are humble enough to be patient with those who still struggle with hurts of the past! He urged us to pray for this kind of leaders, for God to either raise them up or to send them to us!
What an inspiring humble yet confident man of God. We do hope that this short breakfast, started a new relationship that will be beneficial to God’s kingdom for many years to come.
After this meeting it was off to the airport where our journey back home started.
We leave with sad hearts off course! Who wouldn’t? We made some great new friends; picked up on relationships that we thought was part of a time long past; had great experiences of God’s providence and blessing and presence! To leave this all behind is not easy. There are tears every now and again! But we are coming home inspired and excited. God gave us a new perspective and renewed vision for God’s Kingdom! It is indeed coming all over the world. May He keep on using us to do our small part in South-Africa to his honour and glory, with all of you! We do look forward to be with you all and have indeed missed you greatly!
We would like to thank all of you again for all your support - whether it was financially, emotionally, by praying or just by reading our blog and being interested in what we are experiencing! You made this all possible and we can't thank you enough!
Thomas, Erna and Jawé
PS: We are thankful that we arrived safely this morning. We are very tired, but inspired. And still very much PROUDLY SOUTH AFRICAN!!!
The End.
(For now...)
